Muawiyah I

Founder of the Umayyad Caliphate

Umayyad Caliphate 602 โ€“ 680 (Age: 78)

Biography

Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan was a masterful politician and administrator who served as the governor of Syria for 20 years.
Following the death of his kinsman Caliph Uthman, Muawiyah refused to pledge allegiance to Ali until Uthman's assassins were punished, leading to the Battle of Siffin.
After the inconclusive battle and subsequent arbitration, Muawiyah solidified his power in the Levant and Egypt.
Following Ali's assassination, Muawiyah secured the caliphate, founding the Umayyad dynasty. He established a strong centralized administration and built the first Islamic navy.
His reign marked a shift from the patriarchal style of the Rashidun caliphs to a more dynastic, imperial form of governance.
