Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik

Umayyad Caliph

Umayyad Caliphate c. 674 โ€“ 717 (Age: 43)

Biography

Sulayman was the seventh Umayyad caliph, ruling from 715 until his death in 717.
During his brief reign, he orchestrated the most ambitious military campaign of the Umayyad era: the massive Second Siege of Constantinople.
Determined to conquer the Byzantine capital, he sent his brother Maslama with a vast army and fleet. However, the campaign ended in a devastating failure.
Sulayman fell ill and died while at the military camp in Dabiq, eagerly awaiting news of the conquest.
He was succeeded by his pious cousin, Umar II, turning the page on Umayyad aggressive expansionism.
