Marwan II was born in 688 and rose as a military leader before becoming the last Umayyad caliph.
He tried to hold the empire together during severe civil conflict, but Abbasid forces gained momentum and defeated him at the Battle of the Zab.
He fled to Egypt and was killed in 750, marking the end of Umayyad rule in the central caliphate lands.
