The Vandal Kingdom was a Germanic state established in North Africa by the Vandals under King Gaiseric. After crossing the Rhine in 406 AD and moving through Gaul and Hispania, they crossed into North Africa in 429 AD, conquering Carthage in 439 AD and making it their capital. They built a powerful navy that dominated the western Mediterranean, famously sacking Rome in 455 AD. The Vandals were Arian Christians and often persecuted the local Nicene population. The kingdom flourished for a century until it was conquered by the Byzantine general Belisarius in the Vandalic War (533โ534 AD).
