Theoderic the Great was born in 454 into the royal family of the Ostrogoths. As a youth, he spent years in Constantinople as a hostage of the Eastern Roman Empire, where he received a thorough education in Roman law, culture, and military tactics. In 488, Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno commissioned Theoderic to march into Italy to overthrow Odoacer, a Germanic chieftain who had deposed the last Western Roman Emperor.
After a long campaign, Theoderic agreed to a co-ruling treaty with Odoacer. However, during a banquet to celebrate the peace, Theoderic betrayed and personally executed Odoacer, securing sole rule over Italy. He established the Ostrogothic Kingdom, restoring stability by maintaining Roman laws and institutions while integrating the military power of the Ostrogoths.
According to Germanic legends, Theoderic is immortalized as the heroic figure 'Dietrich von Bern' in the Nibelungenlied, who allegedly rode a magical fire-breathing steed. Another legend tells that upon his death, a black demonic horse carried him away and threw him into the volcano of Mount Etna. His majestic mausoleum in Ravenna remains a testament to his synthesis of Roman grandeur and Ostrogothic power.
