Romulus Augustulus

Last Western Roman Emperor

Roman c. 460 AD โ€“ Unknown

Biography

Romulus Augustus, often called with the diminutive 'Augustulus' (Little Augustus), was a teenager when his father, the Magister Militum Orestes, placed him on the imperial throne in 475 AD. His short reign was unrecognized by the Eastern Roman Empire.
In 476 AD, the Germanic mercenary leader Odoacer led a revolt, captured Ravenna, and executed Orestes. Romulus was deposed but spared due to his youth; Odoacer sent him to live in the Castellum Lucullanum in Campania with an annual pension.
His deposition is historically significant as it marks the traditional end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages in Europe.
