History

The Rising Star of the Balkans

Medieval Serbia was one of the largest and most powerful countries in the Balkan Peninsula. Having established an independent kingdom in the late 12th century, Serbia reached its greatest extent under Emperor Stefan Dušan in the 14th century, who proclaimed the 'Serbian Empire.' During this time, Serbia grew immensely wealthy from its abundant silver mines and embraced the culture of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, building many magnificent churches.

The Legend of Kosovo Field

In the late 14th century, Serbia faced a massive threat as the Ottoman Empire advanced into Europe.

The divided Serbian lords banded together to fight the Ottomans at the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. According to a famous legend, the Serbian leader Prince Lazar was offered a choice by an angel between an 'earthly victory' and an 'eternal heavenly kingdom,' and he chose heaven.

During the fierce battle, a brave knight named Miloš Obilić pretended to surrender, entered the enemy camp, and showed incredible courage by assassinating the Ottoman Sultan (Murad I). Both leaders lost their lives in this battle, and Serbia eventually fell under Ottoman rule.

However, this legendary story lived on in the hearts of the people for centuries, giving them the resilient strength to dream of freedom and independence once again.
