History

Thessaly is a vast, fertile plain region in north-central Greece that experienced a complex history as an independent power during the Middle Ages.

A Breakaway from Epirus

Originally part of the Despotate of Epirus, it later became an independent domain ruled by its own leaders. The rulers here also rejected the control of the Byzantine Emperor and pursued their own politics.

Many major powers, including the Byzantine Empire, the Catalan Company, and the Serbian Empire, coveted this fertile land. Thessaly went through much turmoil with frequently changing masters until the Ottoman Empire invaded in the late 14th century.
