Despotate of Epirus

Middle Ages (Byzantine Successor State)Capital: Arta

History

The Despotate of Epirus was one of the independent states founded by relatives of the Byzantine imperial family who fled after the Crusaders captured Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204.

Defying the Emperor's Will

This state was situated in the rugged mountainous regions of what is now northwestern Greece and southern Albania. Even after the Byzantine Empire eventually reclaimed its capital, the rulers of Epirus refused to submit to the emperor and forged their own independent path.

They constantly struggled to survive, performing a delicate balancing act among neighboring Crusader states, the Kingdom of Naples, the Byzantine Empire, and later, the advancing Ottoman Empire.
