Principality of Achaea

Middle Ages (Crusader State)Capital: Andravida

History

The Principality of Achaea was a Western European Christian state established after the Fourth Crusade, dominating most of the western and northern parts of the large Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece.

Western Knights in Greek Lands

The French knights who settled here built Western-style castles and spread chivalric culture on what was once Byzantine land. The Principality of Achaea was considered the wealthiest and most powerful of all the Latin (Western) Crusader states established in Greece.

Over time, however, it had to constantly fight against a resurgent Byzantine Empire and later faced the fierce advance of the Ottoman Empire.
