Duchy of Athens

Middle Ages (Crusader State)Capital: Athens

History

The Duchy of Athens was a state established by Western European knights after the Fourth Crusade (1204), occupying the regions of Attica and Boeotia (in modern central Greece) that were once part of the Byzantine Empire.

Crusader Knights and the Catalan Company

As the name suggests, this country was centered around the great ancient city of Athens. Initially ruled by knights of French origin, it was later seized entirely by the fierce Catalan Company, a band of mercenaries from the region of Spain.

When the Ottoman Empire began its invasion of the Balkans, the Duchy was just one of the many fragmented states in Greece, forced to struggle for its own survival.
