Shi Chaoyi

Final Emperor of Yan

Biography

Shi Chaoyi was the eldest son of Shi Siming. He was known to be more humble and kinder than his father, which earned him the support of many generals who were tired of Shi Siming's cruelty.
In 761 AD, Shi Siming planned to execute Shi Chaoyi to ensure the succession of his younger son, Shi Chaoqing. Warned of the plot and fearing for his life, Shi Chaoyi led a coup and had his father strangled.
As the final emperor of the Yan state, he attempted to continue the rebellion, but the internal instability caused by the repeated patricides and the military pressure from the Tang and Uyghur forces proved too much.
In 763 AD, after his final strongholds fell, he was abandoned by his subordinates and committed suicide in a forest, marking the definitive end of the eight-year An-Shi Rebellion.
