Sima Yi was a highly educated and cautious official who caught the eye of Cao Cao for his practical intelligence. Though Cao Cao was wary of Sima Yi's 'hidden ambition', he proved indispensable due to his administrative skills.
During the Northern Expeditions, he was the only commander capable of matching Zhuge Liang. At the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, his extremely careful defensive strategy successfully neutralized Zhuge Liang's maneuvers, ultimately leading to the Shu army's withdrawal after Zhuge Liang's death.
His patience was legendary. When Zhuge Liang sent him women's clothing to mock his cowardice, Sima Yi calmly wore the clothes and even asked the messenger about Zhuge Liang's health, revealing his cold, analytical nature.
Sima Yi eventually seized control of the Wei government through the Incident at Gaoping Tombs, eliminating his political rivals. This consolidation of power allowed his grandson, Sima Yan, to eventually found the Jin dynasty and unify the Three Kingdoms.
