Delian League

고대Capital: 478 BC Delos / 454 BC Athens

History

The Delian League was a military and maritime confederation founded in 478 BC in the aftermath of the Persian Wars, uniting hundreds of Greek poleis under the leadership of Athens - The cradle of democracy, philosophy, and naval mastery that led the golden age of classical Greece to protect against future Persian aggression and liberate Aegean Greek cities.

The Sacred Isle of Delos - A small sacred island in the central Aegean, legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Its neutral status made it a natural treasury site for the Delian League until Athens moved the funds to the Acropolis. and the Oath of Iron

The league initially held its treasury and assemblies on the sacred island of Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Under the guidance of the upright Athenian statesman Aristides the Just, representatives of the allied cities cast red-hot lumps of iron into the Aegean Sea - The Aegean Sea is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Greek and Anatolian peninsulas. It has been historically important, especially in the time of ancient Greece, as the cradle of two of the earliest civilizations, the Minoan and Mycenaean., swearing a sacred oath: "We shall remain faithful allies until this iron floats to the surface."

From Alliance to Athenian Empire

While originally an egalitarian alliance of equals contributing ships or tribute (phoros), Athens gradually subjugated rebellious members and transformed the league into an imperial dominion. In 454 BC, the league treasury was transferred from Delos to the Athenian Acropolis, where Pericles famously used allied funds to reconstruct the Parthenon and finance Athenian democratic institutions. This growing maritime hegemony provoked alarm across the Peloponnese, culminating in the Peloponnesian War and the league's eventual dissolution in 404 BC following Athens' defeat.
