Demosthenes was one of the most creative generals of the Peloponnesian War. In 425 BC, he conceptualized and executed the fortification of Pylos on the Peloponnesian coast, a move that panicked Sparta and led to the unprecedented surrender of Spartan hoplites at Sphacteria.
Unlike many traditional hoplite commanders, he recognized the value of light infantry and terrain. He experienced a setback in Aetolia but used the lessons learned to defeat the Spartans later.
In 413 BC, he was sent with a relief force to Syracuse to aid Nicias. Recognizing the siege was lost, he urged an immediate withdrawal. However, delaysโcaused by Nicias's superstition over a lunar eclipseโallowed the Syracusans to trap the fleet. Demosthenes was captured during the chaotic retreat and executed.
