Tokhtamysh, a descendant of Jochi, was driven out in the power struggles of his youth and took refuge with Timur in Central Asia. Timur backed him repeatedly with troops and supplies until he took the lands east of the Volga, then pushed aside Mamai — weakened by Kulikovo — and reunited the Horde.
He set about restoring the order the Great Troubles had shaken. In 1382 he marched on Moscow; unable to break its new stone walls by assault, he promised safety in return for surrender, entered the opened gates and burned the city. The tribute resumed.
What came next undid him. Restored to strength, he claimed the old borders of the Ulus of Jochi and moved against the lands of the man who had raised him. Beaten at the Kondurcha in 1391 and the Terek in 1395, he watched Timur burn Sarai and the other Volga cities. He spent his last years as a wanderer toward Siberia and was killed there.
