Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (236โ183 BC) was a Roman general and later consul who is often regarded as one of the greatest military commanders and strategists of all time. His main achievements were during the Second Punic War.
He is best known for defeating Hannibal at the final Battle of Zama in 202 BC, a victory that earned him the agnomen Africanus. Earlier, he had conquered Carthaginian Spain, demonstrating brilliant tactics at the Battle of Ilipa.
Despite his military success and popularity with the people, he faced political opposition in Rome, particularly from Kato the Elder. In his later years, he served as a legate to his brother Lucius during the Roman-Seleucid War, once again facing his old rival Hannibal, who was advising Antiochus III.
