Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus

Roman Consul

Roman fl. 3rdโ€“2nd Century BC

Biography

Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus was a Roman general and statesman, the younger brother of Scipio Africanus. He served as consul in 190 BC and led the Roman forces in the Roman-Seleucid War.
With his brother Africanus serving as his legate, Lucius commanded the Roman army at the decisive Battle of Magnesia in 190 BC, where they defeated Antiochus III the Great. This victory marked the end of Seleucid dominance in Asia Minor and earned Lucius the agnomen Asiaticus.
Upon his return to Rome, he was granted a triumph, but his later political career was marred by accusations of misappropriation of funds from the war indemnity, a scandal driven by his brother's political enemies.
