Perseus of Macedon

Last King of Macedon

Macedonian c. 212 BC โ€“ 166 BC (Age: 46)

Biography

Perseus (c. 212โ€“166 BC) was the last king of the Antigonid dynasty of Macedon. Son of Philip V, he inherited a kingdom that was recovering economically but still under the watchful eye of Rome.
His efforts to reassert Macedonian influence in Greece and his marriage alliance with the Seleucids alarmed the Roman Senate, leading to the Third Macedonian War (171โ€“168 BC). Although he achieved some initial successes, he was decisively defeated by Lucius Aemilius Paullus at the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC.
After his defeat, Perseus was captured and paraded in Rome during Paullus's triumph. He died in captivity in Alba Fucens, and with his fall, the kingdom of Macedon was dissolved and divided into four Roman client republics.
