Biography

Darius III was the last king of the Achaemenid Empire of Persia. His reign was defined by the invasion of the Macedonian King Alexander the Great.
Despite commanding vast armies, he was defeated by Alexander in two major battles: Issus (333 BC) and Gaugamela (331 BC).
After the defeat at Gaugamela, he fled but was eventually betrayed and murdered by his own satrap, Bessus. Alexander gave him a magnificent funeral, honoring him as a worthy adversary.
