History

The Principality of Antioch - Antioch on the Orontes (modern Antakya) was the capital of the Seleucid Empire and one of the largest and most important cities of the Hellenistic world. Founded by Seleucus I Nicator, it served as the western administrative center of the empire and a major hub of trade and culture. was a Crusader state established in 1098 by Bohemond of Taranto following the grueling Siege of Antioch during the First Crusade. It covered parts of modern-day Turkey and Syria along the Mediterranean coast.

It played a major role in regional politics until its capture by the Mamluk Sultanate in 1268.
