History
Numidia was an ancient Berber kingdom situated in North Africa, covering parts of modern-day Algeria and Tunisia. As a powerful neighbor to both Carthage - Carthage (Qart-Hadasht, meaning 'New City') was a powerful ancient civilization based in North Africa. Founded by Phoenician colonists from Tyre in 814 BC, it grew into a vast maritime empire that dominated the Western Mediterranean for centuries until its destruction by Rome. and Rome, it played a pivotal role in the power struggles of the ancient Mediterranean.
The Numidian Cavalry
The Numidians were renowned throughout the ancient world for their swift and agile light cavalry. Riding bareback without saddles or bridles, they were masters of hit-and-run tactics, hurling javelins and retreating before the enemy could strike back. Their cavalry was heavily sought after as mercenaries by both Carthage and Rome.
Major Wars
- Second Punic War (218–201 BC): Numidia initially supported Carthage, but later King Masinissa allied with Rome, providing the crucial cavalry advantage that led to Hannibal's defeat at the Battle of Zama.
- Jugurthine War (112–106 BC): A bitter conflict between Rome and the Numidian King Jugurtha, famous for its guerrilla warfare and political corruption.
