History

The Kartid dynasty (or Karts) was a Sunni Muslim dynasty of Tajik origin - The Tajiks are an Iranian-speaking ethnic group native to Central Asia, primarily living in present-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.Historically, the term was used to distinguish the sedentary, Persian-speaking agricultural and urban populations from the nomadic Turkic and Mongol peoples of the Eurasian steppe. While nomads dominated the region militarily, the Tajiks played a crucial role in administration, trade, scholarship, and preserving Persian high culture.Several important Islamic dynasties in the region were of Tajik origin, notably the Samanids, the Ghurids, and the Kartids of Herat. that ruled over parts of Khorasan and the Bamyan region from their capital in Herat between 1244 and 1381.

Initially serving as vassals to the Mongol Empire and later the Ilkhanate, the Kartids oversaw a significant cultural and economic renaissance in Herat, restoring the city from its previous devastation by the Mongols. Following the collapse of the Ilkhanate in 1335, the Kartids gained de facto independence and expanded their territory, engaging in conflicts with regional rivals like the Sarbadars.

The dynasty's rule came to an end in 1381 when the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) invaded the region, dismantled Herat's fortifications, and absorbed their territory into the emerging Timurid Empire - A great empire founded in the late 14th century by the conqueror Timur, centered on Samarkand and uniting Central Asia and Persia in a brilliant cultural renaissance..
