An ancient Georgian kingdom in the Caucasus (modern eastern Georgia), distinct from the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. Its territorial core was the Kartli region around the middle Kura River basin, and its political frontier shifted between the highland corridors and lowland valleys under pressure from Rome/Byzantium and the Sasanian Empire.
