Proclaimed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War, the German Empire united dozens of independent German states under Prussian leadership and Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. This dramatically shifted the European balance of power.
Endowed with vast coal and iron resources, Imperial Germany rapidly grew into the industrial powerhouse of Europe, pioneering chemistry, optics, and heavy manufacturing. Under Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany pursued 'Weltpolitik' (World Politics), aggressively expanding its colonial empire and building a High Seas Fleet to rival Great Britain.
Allied with Austria-Hungary, Germany fought on both Eastern and Western fronts during World War I. Despite staggering tactical successes, Allied naval blockades and entry of the United States exhausted the nation. In November 1918, domestic revolution forced the Kaiser to abdicate, ending the empire and establishing the Weimar Republic.
