Yang Ye was originally a general for the Northern Han state. After the Song Dynasty conquered Northern Han in 979, he surrendered to Emperor Taizong, who recognized his immense talent and entrusted him with the defense of the northern border against the Khitan Liao Empire.
He earned the nickname 'Yang the Invincible' after a series of brilliant victories, including the Battle of Yanmen Pass, where he used a small force to ambush and crush a superior Liao army. He was feared by the Khitans, who would avoid direct confrontation with his 'Yang Family Army.'
In 986, during the Song's disastrous Yongxi Campaign, Yang Ye was forced into a hopeless situation by the tactical errors and professional jealousy of his fellow commanders. Despite his heroic resistance, he was captured at the Battle of Chenjiagu. Refusing to eat while in captivity, he died of starvation three days later, remaining loyal to the Song. His story, along with those of his sons and descendants, became the basis for the immortal Chinese folk legends of the 'Generals of the Yang Family.'
