Empress Dowager Xiao (Xiao Chuo)

Empress Dowager and Regent of Liao

Biography

Xiao Chuo, widely known as Empress Dowager Xiao, was one of the most capable women in world history. Following the death of her husband, Emperor Jingzong, she became the regent for her young son, Emperor Shengzong, in 982 AD. For the next 27 years, she was the de facto ruler of the Khitan Liao Empire, commanding both the court and the battlefield with immense skill.
She was famous for leading her armies personally. During the Song Dynasty's Yongxi Campaign in 986, she orchestrated the defense of the Sixteen Prefectures and oversaw the capture of the famous Song general Yang Ye. Her tactical acumen ensured that the nomadic Khitan forces remained superior to the settled Song infantry.
In 1004, she personally led a massive invasion deep into Song territory, reaching the city of Chanyuan. This forced the Song into the Treaty of Chanyuan in 1005, which established a long period of peace and trade between the two empires. Under her leadership, the Liao Empire reached its cultural and political peak, blending nomadic military traditions with sophisticated Han-style administration.
