Shi Le was a Jie person who faced extreme hardship in his youth, including being sold into slavery during a famine. However, his natural charisma and military talent allowed him to rise through the ranks of nomadic rebel groups, eventually becoming a powerful general under the Han-Zhao dynasty.
In 319 AD, he declared independence and founded the Later Zhao dynasty. Despite being illiterate, Shi Le had a profound respect for learning and frequently had scholars read historical texts to him. He was known for his 'temple bells' legend, where he supposedly predicted victory by listening to the sound of bells in the wind.
Under his rule, Later Zhao became the most powerful state in Northern China. He balanced the needs of different ethnic groups and laid a strong foundation for the empire, though his successors would later struggle to maintain the stability he created.
