Muhammad II of Khwarazm was born in the late 12th century and inherited a fast-growing state in Central Asia.
He expanded Khwarazmian power across Iran and Transoxiana, but conflict with Genghis Khan triggered a devastating Mongol invasion.
He fled westward and died in 1220, as his empire rapidly disintegrated under military pressure.
