Lucius Licinius Lucullus was born around 118 BC into a Roman aristocratic family and advanced through military and political offices.
In the Mithridatic Wars he defeated forces of Mithridates VI and Tigranes, showing strong command in long-distance eastern campaigns.
He died around 57 BC after retiring from active command, and later generations remembered both his victories and his famous luxurious lifestyle.
