Li Yuan (Emperor Gaozu of Tang)

Biography

Li Yuan (566โ€“635), known later as Emperor Gaozu of Tang, was the founding emperor of the Tang dynasty. Born into an aristocratic family with both Han Chinese and Xianbei heritage, he served as a prominent general and provincial governor under the Sui dynasty.
As the Sui dynasty began to collapse amidst widespread rebellions against Emperor Yang, Li Yuan, encouraged by his son Li Shimin and his close allies, initiated an uprising in Taiyuan in 617. He successfully captured the capital, Chang'an, and established the Tang dynasty in 618.
During his reign, Li Yuan focused on stabilizing the new empire, implementing land reforms, and organizing the administration, while his talented sons, especially Li Shimin, led military campaigns to defeat rival warlords and unify China.
In 626, following the Xuanwu Gate Incident where Li Shimin killed his brothers, Li Yuan abdicated the throne to Li Shimin and took the title of Retired Emperor (Taishang Huang). He spent the rest of his life in peaceful retirement until his death in 635.
