Li Cunxu

Biography

Li Cunxu was the son of the Shatuo Turk leader Li Keyong. Inheriting his father's fierce rivalry with Zhu Wen, he proved to be a military genius, winning numerous battles against the Later Liang forces. In 923 AD, he officially declared the restoration of the Tang Dynasty (known as Later Tang) and successfully destroyed the Later Liang, fulfilling his father's lifelong dream.
However, his brilliance on the battlefield did not translate to effective governance. Li Cunxu was deeply obsessed with the theater and opera. He often performed on stage himself under the stage name 'Li Tian'er' (Son of Heaven Li) and appointed professional actors to high government positions, which deeply alienated his military generals and officials.
His reign ended in tragedy when a rebellion broke out in 926 AD. He was killed during a mutiny in the capital, reportedly by the very actors and performers he had favored. His life remains a famous example of a hero who could conquer an empire but could not manage it due to personal eccentricities.
