Emperor Aizong of Jin (reigned 1224–1234), born Wanyan Shouxu, was the ninth and final emperor of the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty that ruled northern China. By the time he ascended the throne, the Jin empire had already been severely weakened and lost vast territories to the relentless invasions led by Genghis Khan.
Aizong made desperate efforts to revive his dying empire. He attempted to negotiate peace with the Mongols, purged corrupt officials, and tried to rebuild the military. However, the overwhelming might of the Mongol war machine proved impossible to stop. In 1232, following the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Sanfengshan where the last elite Jin army was annihilated, Aizong was forced to abandon his besieged capital of Kaifeng and flee to Caizhou.
In 1234, a joint coalition of Mongol forces and the Southern Song army—eager to reclaim their lost northern lands—surrounded his final refuge at Caizhou. Facing starvation, breached walls, and inevitable defeat, Aizong refused to suffer the humiliation of being captured alive. He hastily abdicated the throne to a distant relative, Wanyan Chenglin (Emperor Mo), and then committed suicide by hanging himself. His death marked the definitive end of the Jin dynasty after more than a century of rule.
