Charles VII, called 'the Victorious' (le Victorieux), inherited a kingdom in crisis, with much of northern France occupied by the English.
His legitimacy was challenged until Joan of Arc led the French to victory at Orlรฉans and saw him crowned at Reims in 1429.
Later in his reign, he reformed the French army and successfully concluded the Hundred Years' War, strengthening the French monarchy.
