Kim Yun-hu

Monk

Goryeo (Korean) 13th century
"If we bow once, we will bow forever."
โ€” Later tradition puts these words in his mouth to express a refusal to submit to Mongol demands.

Biography

Kim Yun-hu was a Buddhist monk during the Goryeo Dynasty who became a military leader in the face of the Mongol invasions of Korea. As royal armies struggled to defend the countryside, local resistance led by monks and peasants became increasingly important.
He is most famous for his role in a battle where Goryeo forces, fighting on difficult terrain and using guerrilla-style tactics, managed to defeat a Mongol detachment. Tradition holds that Kim Yun-hu personally shot and killed a Mongol general with an arrow, shattering the myth of Mongol invincibility among the local population.
His story reflects how religious figures in Goryeo sometimes took up arms to defend their communities, blurring the line between monk and warrior. In later Korean memory, Kim Yun-hu became a symbol of courage and resistance against foreign invasion.
