Juqu Mengxun

Emperor of Northern Liang

Biography

Juqu Mengxun was a member of the Lushui Xiongnu and a key figure in the politics of the Hexi Corridor. After serving under the Later Liang, he and his brothers rebelled, eventually seizing control and establishing the independent state of Northern Liang. He ruled for over three decades, turning his kingdom into a formidable regional power.
Beyond his military achievements, Juqu Mengxun was deeply devoted to Buddhism. Under his patronage, many temples were built, and eminent monks like Dharmakแนฃema were invited to translate sacred texts. His court at Guzang became a vibrant center of learning and spiritual practice, influencing the development of Buddhism throughout East Asia.
His strategic vision allowed Northern Liang to survive between much larger empires for years. However, after his death, the state faced increasing pressure from the unstoppable expansion of the Northern Wei. In 439 AD, his son Juqu Mujian was forced to surrender, marking the official end of both Northern Liang and the Sixteen Kingdoms period.
