Prime Minister of Italy / Leader (Il Duce) of Fascism
"I only need a few thousand dead so that I can sit at the peace conference as a man who has fought."— Attributed to Mussolini in June 1940 while explaining to Marshal Pietro Badoglio why Italy had to enter World War II before France surrendered to Germany.
Benito Mussolini (1883–1945) was the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy who founded the first 20th-century fascist dictatorship, ruling as 'Il Duce' ('The Leader') and aligning Italy with Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany during World War II.
Born in Predappio in northern Italy to a socialist blacksmith father and a Catholic schoolteacher mother, Mussolini qualified as an elementary schoolmaster before rising to prominence as the fiery editor of the Socialist Party newspaper Avanti! When World War I broke out in 1914, however, he broke with socialist internationalism to campaign for Italian intervention on the Allied side, getting expelled from the party and serving in the trenches until he was wounded in 1917.
After the war, Italy was wracked by inflation, strikes, and nationalist anger over what was termed a 'mutilated victory' at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1919 Mussolini founded the Fasci Italiani di Combatimento—taking its name from the ancient Roman fasces, a bundle of rods symbolizing state authority. Backed by his paramilitary 'Blackshirts,' who violently broke up labor strikes and socialist rallies, Mussolini staged the 'March on Rome' in October 1922, pressuring King Victor Emmanuel III into appointing him Italy's youngest Prime Minister at age thirty-nine.
Within a few years, Mussolini abolished opposition parties, censored the press, and assumed dictatorial powers as 'Il Duce.' Proclaiming 'Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State,' his regime used mass rallies, youth organizations, and public works to build a totalitarian model that initially inspired Adolf Hitler in Germany.
Promising to turn the Mediterranean into a new Roman 'Mare Nostrum' ('Our Sea'), Mussolini invaded Ethiopia in 1935 in defiance of the League of Nations. Alienated from Britain and France, he intervened alongside Germany in the Spanish Civil War, annexed Albania, and signed the military 'Pact of Steel' with Berlin in May 1939.
Although Italy's armed forces lacked modern tanks, aircraft, and industrial reserves when Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, France's rapid collapse under German Blitzkrieg in June 1940 convinced Mussolini that the war was nearly over. Eager for spoils at the peace table, he declared war on Britain and France on June 10, 1940. His subsequent invasions of British-held Egypt and Greece turned into humiliating routs, forcing Hitler to dispatch German troops to the Balkans and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps to North Africa.
After Allied forces landed in Sicily in July 1943, the Fascist Grand Council and the King voted to remove and arrest Mussolini. Rescued from a mountaintop hotel by German paratroopers in September 1943, he was placed at the head of the German-controlled Italian Social Republic (Salò Republic) in northern Italy. In late April 1945, as Allied armies and Italian resistance fighters closed in, Mussolini attempted to flee toward Switzerland disguised in a German overcoat, but was recognized and executed by communist partisans near Lake Como on April 28, 1945.
