A powerful mercantile Arab tribe that controlled Mecca - The holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad. It is the site of the Kaaba, the direction of Muslim prayer. Originally a trading hub dominated by the Quraysh tribe, it was conquered by Muhammad in 630. and the Kaaba. They were the main opponents of Muhammad during the early years of Islam.
