Northern Zhou was one of the Northern Dynasties, succeeding the Western Wei. It became a formidable military power through the implementation of the Fubing system.
Under Emperor Wu, it unified Northern China by conquering Northern Qi in 577 AD, laying the groundwork for the Sui to reunite all of China.
