The First Breakaway State

The Berar Sultanate was established in 1490 by Fathullah Imad-ul-Mulk, initiating the Imad Shahi dynasty. Located in the northernmost Vidarbha region, it was the first province to declare sovereign independence following the disintegration of the Bahmani Sultanate.

Gawilghur Stronghold and Ellichpur

Operating from its administrative capital at Ellichpur (Achalpur) and the formidable mountaintop fortress of Gawilghur nestled in the Satpura Range, Berar commanded fertile agricultural river valleys. However, its military power was limited compared to its ambitious southern rivals.

First to Fall

Vulnerable to territorial pressures from both Ahmadnagar to the west and Bijapur to the south, Berar struggled to maintain long-term autonomy. In 1574, Murtaza Nizam Shah I of Ahmadnagar launched a full-scale invasion, capturing the kingdom and making Berar the first among the five Deccan Sultanates to be annexed.
