An ancient kingdom that grew from a peripheral Greek state into the dominant power of Hellenistic Greece. Under Alexander the Great, it established a vast empire stretching from Greece to India, initiating the Hellenistic period. Later, under the Antigonid dynasty, it remained a major power in the Mediterranean until its conquest by Rome.
